Police Blotter, April 14 - 20, 2018

Seattle’s federal passport office’s phone system was apparently hacked this week and that had an impact on an Anacortes person.

A local woman called police on Thursday afternoon, Apr. 19,xs to report that she received a call, per her caller ID, from the “Seattle Passport Office”. The woman called the number back and reached the official passport office who advised her that their phone system had been hacked and they were working to fix the issue. The woman was also referred to IC3.gov for further information and reporting options.

Early Saturday afternoon, an APD Officer contacted a local 38-year old driver known to police to have a suspended driver’s license driving an older model sports car with expired registration tabs as of April 2016. When contacted and arrested for driving with license suspended, the woman admitted that she should not have been driving, but had to pick up a family member as no one else could do it. She was cited and released for driving with license suspended and given a copy of her tickets for driving a motor vehicle without insurance and failure to renew the vehicle’s registration.

Just after midnight on Sunday morning, an APD Officer on patrol on westbound SR 20 near Reservation Road observed an older model sedan drifting within the lane of travel. The officer drove behind the vehicle for some time and ran the registration via 911 dispatch. The vehicle returned to a woman with an arrest warrant, so the officer pulled in behind the vehicle as it parked on South Fidalgo Bay Road. The driver walked away out of sight before the officer could make contact, so she spoke with the other vehicle occupants instead and identified them all. Two of the passengers, a 23-year old Mount Vernon man, and a 27-year old woman from Mount Vernon, had felony arrest warrants. The woman was booked in the county jail on her felony warrant and a misdemeanor warrant, and the male in custody was transferred to a Department of Corrections Officer.

A Terrace Drive resident contacted police on Sunday to report that a rock had been thrown through his pickup window, a repair that will cost the victim $500. There are no suspects.

A 53-year old Anacortes woman was arrested and charged for driving with license suspended and operating a vehicle without an ignition interlock on Sunday afternoon while driving in the area of 10th Street and Commercial Avenue. The arresting officer ran the registration of the vehicle she was driving and determined that she was associated with the car and that she had a suspended license. She was pulled over on 11th Street and taken into custody without incident. Investigation on scene also revealed that she had an ignition interlock requirement and there was not one present in the car. She was cited and released at the scene.

On Monday afternoon an APD Officer took a hit and run report from a woman whose unattended rental car was parked in the area of Seafarers Way while she was on a whale watching trip. When she returned from her trip she observed a hole in the rear bumper of the car, likely caused by a trailer hitch. There are no suspects.

Wednesday, April 18, 2018

A driver called police on Wednesday morning to report that there was what appeared to be a dead otter on the side of the road on State Route 20 near Sharpes Corner. The Department of Transportation was advised of this.

A resident from the 1200 block of 5th Street contacted police on Wednesday morning to report that his vehicle had been prowled sometime overnight. A portable radio, some loose change, and miscellaneous groceries were stolen in the incident.

Just after 6PM on Wednesday, an APD Sergeant was made aware of a hit and run accident that occurred at a business on the 3200 block of Commercial Avenue. Investigation on scene revealed that a man in his 50’s or 60’s driving a maroon colored late model minivan backed into an unoccupied vehicle and left the area. Investigation continues.

On Wednesday at 6PM, the APD K-9 Officer was on patrol on 12th and Commercial when he observed an older model Ford car pass by him and the male driver had a cellphone to his ear. The officer pulled the car over and spoke with the 50-year old Camano Island man who admitted that he had been using his phone, stating that he was checking his messages. The driver also told the officer that he did not have a good driver’s license or registration for the car. K-9 T-Bone was deployed around the exterior of the car and exhibited a change of behavior consistent with the presence of illegal narcotics in the vehicle. The car was impounded pending a search warrant. The driver now faces drug charges in addition to traffic citations based on paraphernalia and a small amount of methamphetamine found in the car during the execution of the search warrant.

Just before 2AM on Thursday, an APD Officer on patrol on 34th Street contacted a local 46-year old woman known to police. The 911 dispatch center advised the officer that the woman had an Anacortes Municipal Court warrant for disorderly conduct and she was taken into custody without incident and booked in the county jail on the warrant.

A local elementary school representative contacted APD on Thursday afternoon to ask for assistance in locating a young boy who did not come in from recess. As an officer was in route to the call, he was given an update that the boy was located and had been hiding in the classroom. The boy was counseled by the officer and agreed not to do this again.

Friday, April 20, 2018

Just after midnight on Friday morning, an APD Officer went to a local grocery store to make contact with a theft suspect. Per store employees, the woman they were with attempted to steal over $700 worth of items from the store, some of which were in her backpack. The 30-year old suspect was arrested and charged with theft and served with a trespass notice, then released from the scene.
