Police Blotter, February 26 - March 5, 2015

There have been several daytime residential burglaries in Anacortes this week in the neighborhoods southwest of D Avenue and 12th Street. Residents in this area of town are reminded to take extra precautions to secure your home and belongings and report suspicious activity to the Anacortes Police Department by calling 911.

Here are some other cases Anacortes Police worked on this week.

Saturday, Feb. 28

5:06 pm.  An Anacortes Police Officer was dispatched to a residence on 7th Street for an animal problem and approached the front door of the home to speak with the owner. The door was ajar and the officer called for the homeowner and was met at the door by the female homeowner and a 40 year-old male known to Police. The male was leaving the residence and was told by the officer that he needed to stay in the area because he was known by the officer to have a warrant for his arrest. The subject then asked if he could go inside the house and wait and was told by the officer that he should stay where he was. He then began acting as though he was going to fight or run away and faced away from the officer, putting his hands in his pockets. At that point the suspect attempted to jump over a nearby gate and was grabbed by the officer as the suspect struggled to gain control of his hands as he was throwing items onto the porch during a brief scuffle. At that point two other officers arrived and the male subject was taken into custody and placed in a patrol car. The officers discovered what appeared to be marijuana, heroin, and methamphetamine on the subject and in a tin he had thrown during the scuffle. When asked about the contents of a plastic baggy found during the search, the suspect stated that that was something he probably should not have and asked if they could “start over.” The man was transported to the Skagit County Jail and booked on his warrant, obstructing, and an investigative hold for Violation of the Uniform Controlled Substance Act.

Sunday, March 1

2:57 am.  An Anacortes Police Sergeant was traveling southbound on R Avenue when he paced a gray Hyundai Sonata traveling at 45 mph in a 35 mph zone. The vehicle continued to travel at fluctuating speeds ranging from 5-10 mph over the posted speed limit when eastbound on SR 20 and was contacted at Sharp’s Corner by the Sergeant. The Police Sergeant smelled a strong odor of intoxicants coming from the vehicle, but the 20 year-old Anacortes driver stated that she had not been drinking and she had been driving fast to get her passengers home. Further investigation revealed that the driver had not been drinking, but a 20 year-old woman in the passenger seat of the vehicle had been drinking beer that evening and she was taken into custody and charged with Minor in Possession of Alcohol. She was released at the scene.

4:43 am.  An Anacortes Police Officer on patrol on G Avenue witnessed a Mercury minivan with an inoperable tail light at the intersection of F Avenue and 9th Street. As the officer was approaching the vehicle, the female driver stated, “I know, my tail light is out.” Further conversation and investigation also revealed that the woman had knowledge of her suspended driving status as she had been contacted the previous day for the broken tail light and a Driving With License Suspended charge. The woman was taken into custody and issued a citation for 3rd Degree Driving With License Suspended and her car was towed since she had received the same charge multiple times in the previous few months. She was released from the scene.

10:28 pm. On Sunday evening, an Anacortes Police Officer was dispatched to a residence on 16th Street per a report of two individuals yelling at each other and what sounded like a physical fight in progress. Upon arrival, the officer contacted two women who had been roommates, age 28 and 22 years old respectively, to investigate. Per their reports, the two women had been involved in a verbal argument at the front door of the home over personal belongings of the 28 year-old woman. The verbal confrontation escalated and the 28 year-old forced her way into the home and grabbed the victim by the shoulders and neck and hit her in the mouth. The aggressor was taken into custody and charged with 4th Degree Domestic Violence and transported to the Skagit County Jail where she was booked on her new charges as well as a warrant for Disorderly Conduct out of the Anacortes Municipal Court.

He was taken into custody on charges of driving with a suspended license and his warrant. The 39 year-old male passenger was also found to have warrants for non-payment of child support as well as malicious mischief. A search of his person incident to arrest yielded a small scale containing white residue in his back pocket. 4:12 pm.  On Tuesday afternoon, an Anacortes Police Officer on patrol on the eastbound State Route 20 spur contacted the driver of a Nissan Altima with expired registration tabs dated February 2014. The 27 year-old female driving the vehicle told the officer that her husband had purchased the vehicle recently and did not have the money to register it in her name yet. The driver was asked for her license, registration, and proof of insurance but was only able to provide a Washington State ID card and registration for the vehicle; no insurance or driver’s license.
