A yellow boom has been placed around the derelict tug Enchantress preliminary to the start of work which will lead to the removal of the tug. First order of business is a cleanup of toxic materials on the tug, including asbestos removal.

The cost of removal is estimated at about $300,000, in addition to the cost of disposing of any toxic materials on the boat.

Actual removal of Enchantress is expected to begin on Sept. 22 or so. Port of Anacortes environmental administrator Connie Thoman said the Global Diving & Salvage, which is handling the project, will try to save special features of the boat, such as boards with the Enchantress name on them.
