Issues of traffic, the cost of gas and questions about a future new bridge from Whidbey Island to the mainland are up for discussion at a town hall-style meeting of the South Fidalgo Community Council, set for this Wednesday.
Fielding questions will be Washington State Senator, Mary Margaret Haugen, D-10th District, and Todd Harrison, assistant regional administrator, Washington State Department of Transportation.
Some 30,000 vehicles travel Highway 20 through Sharpes Corner to Anacortes, I-5, and Whidbey Island. Deception Pass Bridge forms a vital link from Whidbey to the mainland. Passage of Highway 20 through a state park and rural south Fidalgo Island is raising questions about its ability to handle the growing traffic.
In addition, Deception Pass Bridge provides the only surface transportation link to the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. NAS Whidbey is a strategically important facility for national defense and the home base for west coast Navy patrol and electronic warfare aircraft squadrons.
The meeting will held at the Mt. Erie Dewey Beach Fire Hall on Deception Road, this Wednesday, July 9, from 7 – 8:30 p.m.
