Weather forces North Cascades Hwy temporary closure

2015 1112 north cascades closed

The State Route 20 North Cascades Highway was temporarily closed Thursday morning due to an increase in inclement weather over the pass.

At 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12, WSDOT maintenance crews closed the SR 20 North Cascades Highway temporarily due to an increase in inclement weather over the pass. How long will it be closed? Tough to say. We’ll reassess the conditions on Monday but last year, we temporarily closed the roadway on Nov. 23 only to close it for the season the very next day.

The highway is closed on the west side at milepost 134, east of Diablo, and on the east side at milepost 171, 14 miles west of Mazama. Snowfall this week followed by anticipated heavy rain this weekend increases the risk of mudslides and avalanches on the highway.

WSDOT closes the highway in the fall/winter due to heavy snow and slide potential. It reopened on April 3 this year. You can stay informed on mountain conditions by checking our Mountain Pass Road Report website.
