The City of Anacortes will be celebrating the reopening of the Thompson Trail Trestle and thanking all the people and organizations who made this possible.
The Samish Indian Nation is generously hosting the event at the Fidalgo Bay Resort (4701 Fidalgo Bay Road). The event will run from 2pm to 4pm on Friday, March 31.
Mayor Miller will kick off the event thanking our construction partners; Transpac Marinas, Culbertson Marine and Strandberg Construction. He will also thank the Anacortes Parks Foundation for their leadership in gathering donations from such community partners as the Anacortes Kiwanis Club, Samish Indian Nation, Marathon Petroleum, HF Sinclair Refinery, Skagit County Board of Commissioners, Anacortes Rotary, and the Miller Group Charitable Trust.

Skagit County will host a community meeting in Anacortes on Monday, April 22nd, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Anacortes Senior Activity Center located at 1701 22nd Street, Anacortes, WA 98221. The meeting is free and open to the public.
The Skagit County Commissioners and representatives from Planning & Development Services, Public Health, Public Works, the Department of Emergency Management, Facilities Management, and the Sheriff's Office will be in attendance to respond to community questions.

National Night Out returns to Storvik Park
The Anacortes Police Department and a variety of its community partners are proud to invite Anacortes residents to National Night Out!
Taking place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Storvik Park, National Night Out is the product of the many partnerships the APD has with a variety of organizations in Anacortes and around Skagit County. The Anacortes Public Library, Salvation Army, Anacortes Fire Department, U.S. Customs & Border Patrol, Skagit Transit and more will all have a presence. We are placing a specific emphasis on vehicles for kids to come and see this year.
Additionally, the local Kiwanis food trailer will be on hand providing free hot dogs to everyone in attendance. They run out every year, so be sure to come early! Programming will include demonstrations from the Anacortes Fire Department and the police department’s own K-9 T-Bone.

Who: Customers who live within city limits. Verification of residence will be required. Please be ready to show two (2) forms of ID, example: a driver’s license and current copy of a utility bill.
Where: City of Anacortes Operations Facility, D Avenue and 37th Street
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. **Note that we do close our gate at 12:00 p.m. and the line of traffic can sometimes be very long. Please arrive early to ensure you get through the gate before closing.**
What: accepted items are household garbage, furniture, and yard waste.
Please note: No TV sets, propane tanks, tires, large vehicle parts, hazardous waste, construction and demolition waste which includes large lumber, roofing or concrete can be accepted.
**Appliances such as refrigerators and freezers will be accepted for a fee of $57.19. All others such as washers, dryers, hot water tanks will be accepted for a fee of $20.43 and billed to your city account.**
Loads are restricted to one “pick-up load” per customer and may be regulated at the discretion of city staff. Please load your vehicles so that you can unload yard waste first and garbage second. Also please be aware if towing a trailer, that city employees are not allowed to back your vehicle up to the unload area. You must be able to back your trailer. Thank you!

They built their own boats, then tested their boats and themselves on a 100-mile boat trip from Olympia, WA to Port Townsend. There will be a ceremony at 3pm, followed by a walk through along a designated path.
The official program starts in their Fabrication Building at 715 Fourth Street (across from shipyard) at 3 p.m. (Note: doors open at 2:45.
DCI employs 200-400 people in a family-owned business on the Anacortes waterfront. Project work at the shipyard ranges from new construction to maintenance and repair. The list of projects over the years ranges from federal research vessels to state ferries, from commercial fishing vessels to tugboats.
Among the most high profile construction projects were the “Neil Armstrong” and the “Sally Ride,” research vessels with names honoring two U.S. astronauts. DCI, established in Whatcom County in 1975, moved to Anacortes in 1977 after signing a lease with the Port of Anacortes.
The company jumped right into new construction work, signing contracts to build several crab boats. Improvements over the years include purchase of a drydock, construction of a fabrication building and installation of a syncrolift. The emphasis is “hands on,” learning and enjoyment, making Anacortes Earth Day fun for all ages. Don’t miss the Sustainable Fashion Show–highlighting the impact of fast fashion on the environment–a joyful parade of locals and re-imagined outfits starting from 402 Commercial at 4:30.

Forty years ago, our commercial fishermen sold their used gear as yard art on Commercial Ave. "Shipwreck" has evolved into a massive community garage sale including flea market and antique vendors.
The event technically starts at 8 am, but there are usually some businesses and booths that get started right at first light, just like the old time fishermen used to. This event features over 200 vendors set up in booths along Commercial Ave.; each booth brings something new and usually very eclectic, and you are sure to find something that you can’t live without. There are also some food stands set up that serve a variety of different and delicious treats.
This event is family friendly and is organized by the Fidalgo Island Rotary Club. But, please leave your pet at home.

On Thursday, October 16, 2025 at 10:16 a.m., Island Health staff will participate in the Great Washington ShakeOut earthquake drill along with the City of Anacortes, Anacortes Fire Department, Skagit Community Emergency Response Team, Skagit Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Club, and individuals and communities throughout Washington State. During the drill, Island Health will activate incident command and test surge capacity through the Emergency Department with mock scenarios and patients.
Island Health is holding this drill in conjunction with International ShakeOut Day, which is held on the third Thursday of October annually. During the self-led drill, participants practice how to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.” Endorsed by emergency officials and first responders, the safe response to an earthquake is to:
If Possible
DROP where you are, onto your hands and knees. This position protects you from being knocked down by shaking and reduces your chance of being hit by falling or flying objects.
COVER your head and neck with one arm and hand.
HOLD ON until the shaking stops.
