@Rockfish: Kalyna Rakel & Dan Gurman

Wed. Jul 20, 2022 6:00 pm

Kalyna and Dan started playing music together in 2020, just as Covid closed music venues. They’ve come from the hardest of starts on Hornby Island on Canada’s remote west coast to embarking on a UK tour in a little under 18 months. They’ve played all across Canada and are currently touring in the US, working their way west. They are committed to their music and that commitment shines through when you hear it.

Kalyna plays guitar, harmonica and drums as well providing vocals that fuse the power and unique qualities of Janis Joplin and Lena Lovich. She commands your attention and sings from the heart until it bleeds with gut-curdling emotion. Accompanied by guitar maestro Dan Gurman, who sits coolly impervious at the eye of the storm, Kalyna’s music rampages round the crowd like a tornado at a vicar’s tea party. It sweeps all before it, grabs your attention and doesn’t let go.

Together they balance and produce a bulldozer of sound.

Crowd reaction is sharp – from “Wow, what’s that!” to “WTF!” to cameras out recording in the time it takes a Ferrari to go from 0 – 60. The music and lyrics have passion that is real emotion, they play what they mean and they mean what they play.

Kalyna and Dan welcome you. You’ll not have heard anything like their music. And you probably won’t again until you see them the next time…

@Heart of Anacortes: The Savage Blues Band

Sat. Jul 23, 2022 6:00 pm

The Savage Blues Band’s roots go back to the garage-band era of the late1960s. Local legend, John Savage, emerged from this period as a lifelong professional musician and music educator, with proficiency on guitar, keyboards and bass.

Around 2006, John connected with several old MVHS pals to form “Johnny & The Moondogs,” a blues band that performed regularly in Oak Harbor and Anacortes. The band expanded its blues firepower when John’s talented son, Tom, joined the group on blues harp and guitar in 2013.

In 2018, the band was renamed “Savage Blues Band,” and its popularity continued to grow. Sadly, in December 2019, the group lost its leader and beloved friend/father, John, to cancer.

Before he passed, John urged the group to continue showcasing the blues. And so, the Savage Blues Band carries on today, with Tom Savage as its leader…delighting blues fans and all who understand the importance of this genre. “We’re on a mission from John.”

@Heart of Anacortes: Broken Banjo

Sat. Jul 30, 2022 6:00 pm

The Whidbey Island Band “Broken Banjo” could be described as a Folk/Americana vocal group but that would not begin to describe the range of what this exciting trio delivers. Only a few years together, they’ve managed to each bring something special from their diverse backgrounds and influences. In the span of a few songs, Broken Banjo can move from a soulful ballad, a jazz standard to a classic blues. What makes them interesting is their unique arrangements with three-part harmony. With Larry Mason on rhythm guitar, Kevin Johnson on lead acoustic and electric and Deirdre Fairfax on guitar and lead vocals, these three creatively collaborate from their own perspectives and strengths to put a “Broken Banjo” stamp on each song. Their name was adopted from the Deirdre’s father’s music and coffee house in a small town in Millington in the mid-sixties. It seemed like a perfect namesake for the band that loves to share songs that span across genres and time.

@Rockfish: Mary Ellen Likens & the CC Adams Band

Sat. Jul 30, 2022 7:30 pm

Mary Ellen Lykins & The CC Adams Band perform with passion and Mary Ellen is the icing on the cake. There’s no mistaking the voice, Mary Ellen has power and grit that gives you chills. Thwarting the conventional, the band thrives on unique arrangements with roots in the Blues and an eclectic mix of R&B and tasty Rock mixed in. Excitement and energy prevail.

Mary Ellen Liken’s influences started with vocal lessons, musical theater and classical music. She moved to the PNW from Utah in 2010 making it her home and sharing her singing in this vibrant music scene. She’s been performing music in some fashion since inspiration from the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. Mary Ellen gives her all to each and every song adding a passionate voice to the story or the mood. Some have described her sound as reminiscent of Etta James with a dash of Janis Joplin.

An album of all original songs written by CC Adams and Mary Ellen Lykins “Let’s Play With Matches” was released in 2019.

C.A. Clayton, former owner Telluride Jazz Fest: “Mary Ellen Lykins is one of those vocalists who give you goosebumps! … add to that the tight music arrangements and hot saxophone and it’s amazing all around…”

Janice Cleven Gage, Music Director: “The group makes it impossible to stay in your seat…unless you’re mesmerized by the incredible vocals of Mary Ellen Lykins. One of my favorite bands!”

@Brown Lantern: Three for Silver

Sat. Jul 30, 2022 9:00 pm

Three For Silver is an aggressively original band that is impervious to easy description.

PR people often use phrases like Mythic Americana, Doomfolk, or Apocalypso.

Some of those are pretty good, but they still just feel like the desperate necessities of someone forced to fill out a  form box labelled "Genre".

Three For Silver features one-of-a-kind instruments you've never seen playing styles mixed in ways you've never heard. Perhaps it is pop music from an exceptionally dark parallel dimension. The band has hit the road since 2013, and their monomaniacal devotion has already led them all over the USA and the world, from Accordion Festivals in Vienna to Modern Music Expos in Russia, and even partnering with the US State Department for ongoing cultural exchange tours to countries thirsty for truly original American music.
