Humanities WA Presents: From Crime to Classroom

Blending his personal story and scholarship, Omari Amili leads a discussion on the benefits of the “prison-to-college pipeline,” where incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people can take college courses and receive a degree. Studies have shown that education is one of the best ways to reduce the chance of returning to prison, and Amili explores how we all benefit—as individuals and a society—from the new perspective, sense of direction, and confidence education provides. Amili is an author and community leader who has worked with South Seattle College, the ACLU of Washington, and Civil Survival. Humanities WA Presents: From Crime to Classroom. Wednesday, May 5th 7:00 pm. Live Zoom Event

District hosts town hall on reopening plans

The Anacortes School District will host a town hall regarding its reopening plans, health department guidelines, and next steps, on Wednesday, May 12 from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. at Seahawk Stadium’s Rice Field, 1600 20th Street. In-person attendance will be allowed up to 400 people, socially distanced and masked. The event will also be live streamed: youtube.com/ahslive

Superintendent Justin Irish, members of the Anacortes School Board, and district staff will provide an overview of the district’s decisions throughout this school year, including information on health department guidelines, chain of command, and next steps for fall, 2021. There will be an opportunity for audience members to ask questions.

Manieri Endowment Presents: The Onliest Monk

In this three-part video presentation on the life and music of the one and only Thelonious Monk, hear saxophonist Brent and his colleagues in the “Monkstone Theocracy” quartet as they explore the Monk heritage. Between the performances, Brent explains Monk’s remarkable musical innovations and why he is seen as a founding genius in the jazz revolution that began in the nineteen forties. Pop-up Book Sale: Friends of the Library Trunk Sale

The Anacortes Friends of the Library invite you to support the library by browsing and buying books at a pop-up trunk sale in the library parking lot. Books will be in volunteer’s car trunks and you are invited to safely browse outside to find some brand new reading material. After more than a year of being closed, the Friends Shop is excited to show you some of the books that are waiting for a new home. All sales from the Friends Shop support library services including program funding, collection development, and children’s services.
