The owners of Island Video have decided to shut down after trying for a year to sell the small business. Island Video will close at the end of this month.

36 H.S. Seniors win scholarships

Thirty-six Anacortes High School graduating seniors were awarded scholarships totalling more than $60,000 during a ceremony Thursday night. Two of the scholarships were for $10,000.

High percentage of seniors pass WASL

More than 93% of the Anacortes High School class of 2008 have met state standards in reading and writing and could be in line to graduate on Friday, June 13, if they meet other requirements, according to figures released this week. 

City may still win T-Mobile case

City Attorney Ian Munce told the City Council on Monday that the city still has a chance to win the match with T-Mobile, which won a court ruling which overturned the city’s refusal to allow a cell tower in a residential area.

New Friday Harbor hospital proposed

An effort is under way on San Juan Island to build a small, $30 million hospital in Friday Harbor in conjunction with PeaceHealth, the non-profit owner of St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Bellingham.

The Cove at Fidalgo Bay approved

The City Council gave the go ahead for an 18-unit condominium project in a Commercial Marine zone on Fidalgo Bay at their Monday night meeting.

Dozens of Anacortes children carried a paper chain around a new playground, built in five days by more than 1,000 volunteers, then the kids rushed onto the playground they designed before it was officially opened Sunday evening.

Adventure at the movies

Indiana Jones

There’s adventure in the movies this weekend. These three films are at the Anacortes Cinema. The most adventurous is Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Couldn’t they have found a longer name? Anyway, the film is a kick to watch. Its good to see Harrison Ford back as Indiana Jones. The film’s script wandered a bit. A couple chase scenes grew too long. One chase, however, on a college campus, was really fun, though.
