June 6
A 27-year-old Anacortes man who was a suspect in a stabbing incident that occurred outside of the City limits walked into the police department and turned himself in. A Skagit County Sheriff’s deputy arrived at APD and transported the man to jail.
A 53-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for drunk driving after an officer stopped his car in the area of 17th Street and K Avenue. The car had been traveling extremely slowly and had stopped in front of the officers’ car for no apparent reason. When the officer contacted the driver to check on him, the driver smelled of intoxicants, had slurred speech and watery eyes, and performed poorly on field sobriety tests. The driver claimed he had not been drinking although the bed of his vehicle contained numerous empty wine bottles. The driver also had a probationary driving status for a previous drunk driving arrest. The man was placed under arrest and subsequently provided two breath samples that were almost three times the legal limit. The man was cited for DUI and released to a sober adult.
A 14-year-old Anacortes teen and his 15-year-old friend reported that they had been shot at with a BB gun or pellet gun by the father of another teenaged friend in the 2000 block of M Avenue. The 14-year-old suffered a wound to his arm where blood was visible. The two teens said that they had been engaged in good natured teasing with the third teen when the third teens’ father threw a rock towards them. The rock missed hitting anyone. The two teens said that they had been walking in the alley near the friend/man’s house a short time later when they heard what sounded like a pellet gun and the 14-year-old felt pain and realized that he had been shot. The teens reported that the man then walked out into the alley and said that he had “missed” them, but that when he saw one of the boys had been hit, he reportedly denied even shooting an air gun. The teens reported that the man then threatened to shoot them with a .22. No one would answer the door at the man’s house and the matter is still under investigation.
A 31-year-old Friday Harbor man was cited for negligent driving after his pickup collided with a parked double tractor trailer semi in the 5300 block of Ferry Terminal Road. The driver parked his pickup behind a nearby building and walked away. He later told an officer that he had fallen asleep in his pickup on the ferry and that he must have been “sleep driving” when he drove off the ferry and struck the semi. The man claimed he couldn’t steer his pickup due to the damage, so he had walked into town to get a cup of coffee.
June 7
A 42-year-old Anacortes woman died at her residence in the 1000 block of O Avenue. The woman’s husband found her unconscious on their bedroom floor and performed CPR until paramedics arrived. Resuscitation efforts were not successful. The cause of death is under investigation by the Skagit County Coroner’s office.
A Bothel resident reported the theft of binoculars, a pair of sunglasses, and approximately $250 in cash from their 30 foot boat that was inside of a fenced dry storage boat yard for maintenance in the 700 block of 30th Street. Miscellaneous tools and bottles of liquor were also reported missing.
June 8
A 43-year-old North Bend woman was arrested on a warrant for a previous hit and run charge after an officer contacted her in a park after hours near the beach on N Avenue. During a search of the woman’s purse, the officer located a glass smoking pipe with white and black residue. The woman said that she used the pipe to smoke methamphetamine due to chronic back pain. The woman was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia and booked into jail on the warrant.
Officers responded to a domestic dispute in the 4700 block of Cypress Drive. Officers spoke with a 46-year-old man and his 37-year-old girlfriend. The man said that the couple had argued over the woman’s excessive use of alcohol and that the argument had cumulated with him throwing water on the woman to “sober her up.” The man reportedly told an officer that you’d throw water on a dog to get it to leave you alone, so he figured he wouldn’t get in trouble for throwing water on his girlfriend. The woman did show signs of intoxication and she said that she had tried to leave the house with the couple’s daughter. The woman said that her boyfriend had ripped a necklace from her neck and tried to strangle her. She had fresh red marks on her neck. The man was determined to be the primary aggressor and booked into jail for domestic violence assault.
A 33-year-old transient woman with Anacortes ties was arrested at a nearby casino after a Swinomish Tribal Police officer recognized the vehicle she was driving as being reported stolen from a marina parking lot in the 3100 block of V Avenue earlier in the day. The vehicle owner had left the key in the SUV while he had been on his boat at the marina. The victim was taken to his vehicle and discovered that the contents of the SUV had been rifled through. Officers also located items in the vehicle that did not belong to the victim.
The suspect’s mother also called to report that she had seen her daughter leaving the mother’s driveway driving the stolen SUV in the 600 block of Hillcrest Drive. A no-contact order prohibited the daughter from being at her mother’s house. The mother discovered that the front door to the house had been kicked in, some food in the house had been eaten, and that she was missing the handset to her telephone. The stolen handset was discovered inside of the stolen SUV at the time of the daughter’s arrest.
The woman was booked into jail and faces possible charges of possessing stolen property, burglary, and violating a no-contact order.
June 9
A resident of the 1700 block of 37th Street reported that two unknown males had tried to steal his car. The man’s neighbor had called 911 after hearing voices and a car alarm going off near her home. One suspect was seen running to a car and leaving with the second suspect. The victim’s car was discovered to be running with its’ doors open, and the ignition and steering column had been tampered with and damaged. The incident is under investigation.
Officers responded to a motel room in the 2000 block of Commercial Avenue after a witness heard a girl screaming and a woman threatening to hit the girl with a belt. Officers could hear yelling from inside of the room and they contacted a 38-year-old woman who said that she had been disciplining her 13-year-old step-daughter for not doing what she was told to do. The girl reported her mother had pulled her by the wrist, pulled her hair, and hit her across the knee with a belt. The girl had a small cut on her knee that was allegedly caused by the metal buckle of the belt. Officers determined that the woman’s actions exceeded reasonable parental discipline and she was arrested for domestic violence assault and booked into jail.
June 10
An officer observed an occupied car in the parking lot of the Anacortes Library at around 4:00 AM. He contacted a 29-year-old Anacortes man in the car and a records check revealed that the man had three outstanding warrants for his arrest. The man was taken into custody and transported to the county jail.
A 64-year-old Anacortes woman reported that an early teenaged boy had stolen her purse out of a cart she uses for shopping while she had been walking near the intersection of 4th Street and O Avenue. The woman said that juvenile had run up behind her, reached in the cart and grabbed her purse, and then ran off. The suspect was not located.
A 31-year-old Anacortes man called 911 to report that he was depressed and thinking about hurting himself. Authorities had earlier received complaints of a man standing in front of moving vehicles near Washington Park, and the man admitted that had been him. He voluntarily went to the hospital for evaluation.
A Bothel man reported that someone had gotten onto his boat that was stored in a boat yard in the 700 block of 30th Street and stolen a television and a multi-meter.
A resident on 7th Street near H Avenue called in a suspicious vehicle parked in the neighborhood. An officer responded and contacted four 18-year-old Anacortes men and a 17-year-old Anacortes girl in the vehicle. Smoke billowed out of the car when the driver rolled down the window and the vehicle’s interior smelled strongly of burnt marijuana. All of the occupants of the car admitted to smoking marijuana and the officer found suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the car. The teens were either cited or referred for possession of marijuana and/or drug paraphernalia and released.
June 11
An officer stopped a 24-year-old Mount Vernon man for traveling at almost twice the legal speed limit in the 2100 block of Q Avenue. The officer discovered drug residue and drug paraphernalia in the man’s car. The man was cited for negligent driving and charges are pending for possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.
A 15-year-old Anacortes boy was caught shoplifting a bottle of eye drops by an employee of a grocery store in the 900 block of 11th Street. The boy initially told the officer he was from Oregon, but admitted he had lied when the officer found Anacortes School books in his backpack. The boy also had five white pills in his pocket that he said he had stolen from his aunt’s house. The boy was referred for theft and possession of a legend drug without a prescription.
Officers responded to a burglary complaint at a house in the 1600 block of 10th Street. The homeowner said that someone had entered the house through an open window and stole a computer system, a camera, and a revolver. The value of the stolen items exceeded $1000.00. The case is still under investigation.
A 23-year-old Anacortes woman and a 15-year-old Anacortes girl were arrested for shoplifting after store security observed them trying to leave a store in the 900 block of 11th Street without paying for bags of deli items. The adult was cited and released and the juvenile was released to a relative after being referred for theft.
June 12
A station wagon backed into a pickup that had stopped in an alley in the 1000 block of 16th Street. It was discovered that the driver of the station wagon, a 38-year-old Anacortes man, had a suspended driver’s license and an ignition interlock requirement from a previous DUI conviction. The car did not have an interlock device, and the man was cited for the suspended driving status, the interlock violation, and having no insurance.
An Anacortes man reported a burglary to a building in the 2400 block of R Avenue that he rented space in for an art studio. A broken window was discovered at the rear of the building and a fire extinguisher had been discharged inside. An interior door into the art studio had been forced open and the contents of the studio rifled through. The victim is working on determining what property was stolen.
A 34-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested on a felony warrant for a previous possession of a controlled substance offense after an officer contacted her seated in a vehicle in the alley near the 1700 block of 13th Street. A search of the vehicle also located items of drug paraphernalia and additional charges are pending against the woman. She was booked into jail on the warrant.
