The state has notified the city that it will contribute $500,000 toward the cost of a roundabout planned for Commercial Ave. and Highway 20.

The state Transportation Improvement Board notified the city it will give the city the money in a grant toward the approximately $700,000 total cost of the roundabout. The Mayor had earlier said the city had applied for the grant.

The project is one of only four local projects funded by the state gas tax.

The City Council last week approved a $197,000 contract with design firm Reid Middleton for a final design of the roundabout. The firm had earlier completed a roughly 30 percent design to allow the city to receive the preliminary okay of the state transportation department and state funding.

The city hopes the final design will be complete soon enough to allow construction to start next summer.

In addition to final plans, Reid Middleton will draw up specifications, engineering estimates and obtain permits while coordinating the project with the state Department of Transportation. Reid Middleton will also hold an open house for the public.
