The ferry Elwha had to be towed to the Anacortes ferry terminal after its engines failed near Shaw Island this morning. A smaller ferry will replace the Elwha while repairs are under way.

Washington State Ferries says the Elwha is out of service until later this week.

The 90-car ferry Sealth is being moved this afternoon from the Eagle Harbor maintenance facility to replace the 144-car Elwha while necessary repairs are made.

WSF says service will return to normal when the Sealth makes the scheduled 6:50 p.m. sailing tonight to Lopez and Orcas Island.

The Elwha had about 100 cars and 200 passengers on board when it was towed to Anacortes.

Three other ferries remain on San Juan Island routes.
