The Mayor and City Council Monday night honored Kathy Janke, who has been Council Secretary for 21 years. She'll be retiring from city service in December.

Mayor Dean Maxwell said of Janke "She has listened to hundreds if not thousands of hours of conversations about the development of the City, taken thousands of pages of notes, and transcribed all of that into legible material that is the history of Anacortes as well as a key part of her own legacy with the City."

Kathy Janke started her city career in 1978, working in the city Finance Department, then moved into a receptionist position. After working the front desk at city hall, the city moved Kathy to Council Secretary, where she's been the official note-taker for Council meetings. Meanwhile, she took on other jobs at city hall, too, ending up in the city Planning Department. She is currently Land Use Permit Manager.

Maxwell said "Kathy’s efforts, while behind the scene, have always been a strong support of the City and have helped Anacortes develop into the fine City it is today.  I’d like to thank Kathy for all she has done for the Council and myself over these years."

Janke was also involved in the establishment of the Farmers Market. She was a leading catalyst in getting the city involved with the Sister Cities International membership and participated in the first trip to Kisakata, Japan, one of Anacortes' sister cities.

Monday night was her last night at City Council. She has been replaced by Marcia Hunt.
