Sips and Licks at Hellam’s Vineyard

The cooperation of Summit Assistance Dogs of Anacortes and Hellam’s Vineyard of La Conner brought about a friendly gathering on Sunday.

The wine shop on 109 North 1st Street in La Conner was full of lively chatter and wagging tails as half a dozen service dogs, their owners and friends spent an afternoon socializing.

Summit trains several types of service dogs, including mobility assistance and hearing dogs. The carefully selected canines are given to the clients free of charge, but only after intensive hands-on preparation. The training facility, under Sue Meinzinger’s leadership, has fourteen successful years behind it. They are continuously looking for new dogs to train and volunteers to help.

During the event Lacey Woods impressed the crowd with her golden retriever, Isabelle. The canine unfailingly switched lights on and off and retrieved objects Lacey intentionally dropped on the floor. Isabelle is one of Summit’s many graduates.

Hellam’s Vineyard offered the two-legged attendees free samples of wines, some named after dogs. Trays of cheese and crackers, along with other hors d’oeuvres were scattered throughout the store on trays. Not one dog tried to steal a nibble.

Hellam’s selection of bottles is extensive. The shop also hosts a wine club. Their website www.hellamsvineyard.com offers more information.

Summit is able to carry on its mission thanks to willing supporters. Their facility is located on 12549 Christianson Rd., Anacortes. For more information, visit This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
