New Planning Director named Print
By Arthur Shotwell
August 19, 2008

The City has chosen Ryan Larsen, the brother of Congressman Rick Larsen, as the new City Planning Director for Anacortes, replacing Ian Munce.

City Human Resources Director Emily Schuh said his appointment will go to the City Council for confirmation on Sept. 2. She said he will start work the next day.

Schuh said Larsen's experience includes economic development, both in the private sector as well as in public service. She said his work for Anacortes will include economic development management.

Mayor Dean Maxwell told a reporter economic development experience was a top priority when he considered candidates. “I think that’ll need to be our focus as we all try to recover from this difficult economy.”

Larsen told Anacortes Now that, as a City Councilman, he pushed for a $100,000 economic development plan for old town part of Arlington. Larsen has also been a senior planner with Snohomish County.

In his application letter, Larsen said "As a former business owner, I am well aware of the needs, concerns and challenges facing management. By the same token, I am accustomed to operating with the best interest of the total business in mind."

Larsen has a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Washington, a bachelor’s degree in geography from Central Washington Univ., and an associate of arts degree from Skagit Valley College.
