Dakota Creek redevelopment kicked off |

Officials gathered today to help break ground on a major redevelopment of Dakota Creek Industries shipyard at Pier 1.
Dakota Creek is kicking in upwards of $10 million, with the Port of Anacortes contributing around $5 million and the state Department of Ecology another $5.6 million.
Much of that cost is going for environmental cleanup, shoreline restoration, utility upgrades and improvements to public access. The first phase, which started today, involves removing 140,000 cubic yards of sediment from Dakota Creek’s ship basin.
The upper three to ten feet of sediment is contaminated with metals, PCBs and petroleum products which accumulated over decades of industrial work.
The dry dock at the end of Pier 1 will go into one side of the ship basin to free up moorage space at the end of the pier. Smaller buildings will be removed and a rail system will be nstalled to allow the movement of vessels around the shipyard.
The port has worked on the redevelopment project for more than 10 years and will take until 2010 to complete.
