Traffic along Sixth Ave. east of the Guemes Ferry Landing will be re-routed for the next 2 months while the city re-constructs Sixth from the ferry landing east to K Ave. That portion of Sixth will be closed starting Tuesday, Mar. 9.
The work, which is funded by a federal ARRA grant, includes the construction of new curb, gutter, sidewalk, storm drainage, and pavement between I Avenue and K Avenue, and new sidewalk on the south side of the street between K Avenue and O Avenue. The scheduled completion date for the work is May 12.
The project includes a new school and SKAT bus stop on the southwest corner of Sixth and I Ave, as well as the installation of a 10-foot wide pedestrian-bicycle path on the south side of the street between I and O avenues.
The project will cost $480,000, significantly less than the federal stimulus grant of $700,000, forcing the city to return $220,000 to the federal government for use on other stimulus projects.
The project is being undertaken in conjunction with work being done at the Guemes ferry terminal.
