Dean's Bench: A great view on a beautiful day Print

When Dean Allen was alive, you could frequently find him with a mischievous smile at this spot at the end of Fifth St. in the Cap Sante neighborhood. After he died last December, his friends got together and paid for two benches to honor him.

The benches are placed right where he and his dog spent so many hours savoring the view of Mount Baker, the boat traffic, and the ever-changing moods of Fidalgo Bay. This shoreline access gives a close-up picture of the wide angle viewpoint seen from the top of Cap Sante.

Visitors are be able to rest their legs, relax and watch our living island postcard.

City Council member Cynthia Richardson and the City worked with Parks and Forest Lands Manager John Lunsford through the planning stages to the installation of the benches on Monday, Feb. 15.

Donations to help fund this small memorial park area were collected through the OARS rowing club, a group that enjoyed many years of Dean’s storytelling and expertise as a Master coxswain.

The plaques on the benches will keep Dean’s sense of humor close by with two of his favorite sayings, remembering one of Anacortes’s finest.
