Fabulous Fourth Planned Print
By Art Shotwell
July 01, 2009

Fourth of July fireworks will be handled by an Oregon company this year because John Curtis has decided to end his 15-year run handling Anacortes’ fireworks displays.

Western Display Fireworks of Canby, Ore., has been providing firework displays throughout the Northwest for over 59 years. Curtis cited a number of reasons for ending his annual fireworks display, including difficulty obtaining larger shells and Homeland Securty concerns.

But, there’s more to the Fourth than fireworks, which comes late in the day.

The Anacortes American will take their annual town photo at 10am at the corner of Commercial Ave. and Fifth St.

Then, the Anacortes Women of Today will launch their annual parade, leading off with the kids’ parade at 11am, followed immediately by the rest of the parade. AWOT invites everyone to participate in the parade. Just report to Second St. and Commercial Ave. between 10am and 10:45.

The parade will be followed by a patriotic program at 12:30 at Causland Park. The program includes speeches, children’s games, the town crier, music and food booths.

The fireworks is expected to start at around 10:30 pm over Fidalgo Bay. The dislay will be set off near T Ave. and 30th St. Parking will not be allowed in the area. Nor will parking be allowed the Cap Sante viewpoint. Seafarers’ Memorial Park parking area will be closed and the area south of Cap Sante Marina is fenced off for environmental work. But, there is parking around the marina available.

The fireworks display is costing about $20,000, with the city putting up $5,000 and the Anacortes Parks Foundation paying the balance.
