Ferry service may be back to normal Thursday Print

Washington State Ferries expected to back to full capacity in the San Juans, starting Thursday, if the Kaleetan passes overnight sea trials Wednesday night after more than a month of scheduled maintenance at Dakota Creek in Anacortes.

The ferry system went on summer schedule last weekend, but without one of the regular boats on the Anacortes-Friday Harbor run, the 144-car Kaleetan. Consequently, they pulled in the 34-car Hiyu for inter-island runs and moved the 90-car Sealth from inter-island service to the main Anacortes-Friday Harbor service.

These changes left the Anacortes-Friday Harbor run with less capacity and greatly reduced inter-island travel.

Also on the Anacortes- San Juans run are the 144-car Yakima and the 124-car Chelan. The Hiyu is the ferry system’s only backup vessel.
