Anacortes - The American Red Cross has deployed 6 more disaster managers to Haiti to support the 15 managers on the ground already. The Red Cross Disaster supply warehouses in Panama have been engaged in sending materials to the region. The Red Cross pledged $200,000 immediatly after the earthquake and has now raised that to 1 million dollars in relief.
Initial reports at sunrise this morning said the damage is "worse than a war zone" and the death toll will reach well into the thousands. The presidential palace colapsed as well as the UN headquarters leaving the country without immediate direction and responders.
The world is rallying for Haiti as flights take of from around the world to aid the poorest country in the western hemisphere. We too can do our part to help with cash donations.
All money earmarked for the disaster in Haiti goes directly to the disaster, if you would like to make a cash donation go to our web site www.asjiredcross.org or www.redcross.org to make an electronic contribution. You may also make donations in person by stopping by the Anacortes-San Juan Islands Red Cross office at 2900 T Avenue in Anacortes. If you have any questions or would like more information, please check the Red Cross website or call 360-293-2911.
