Derelict tug may be removed this week

The derelict tug Enchantress, which has been stuck on the bottom of Fidalgo Bay for several years, may be removed early this week.

Local artist and historian Bill Mitchell says he's been told the contractor will bring a barge alongside Enchantress on Monday. He said he expects the tug will be removed fairly soon.

Removal of the tug is part of the high priority clean up of Fidalgo Bay by the state Department of Ecology, which says boat contains toxic materials that should not be in the bay. And, the tug is on property owned by the state Department of Natural Resourcesand they want it removed.

The boat is hung up on a pier that will be part of the Fidalgo Bay cleanup.

Mitchell has fought for months to save Enchantress by either leaving it to disintegrate in place or moving it to a better location. He says it is a local landmark.
