Just last year some 425 tons of unexploded bombs and shells were removed from French soil. Of these, nine tons were considered toxic. Sixty-five years since D-day and the bombs and shells continue to make their way to the surface of Normandy’s soil because of centrifugal force exerted by the earth.
France has 320 mine-clearing experts on the payroll. Jean-Yves Siffointe, head of the civil security section said, « If, as some people estimate, there were about a billion and a half bombs, rockets and shells dropped on French soil since the first World War, it will take us another seven hundred years to clean it all up.
